Girl and boy ran miles and miles all the way from nolita to the west side of manhattan and along the water's edge. Not a scenic beach trail exactly, more like the sidelines of a toxic dump, but anyway.. it was a good start. So good in fact that they resolved, right there, panting for breath and tired after the first few blocks, that their next conquest would be Mt. Everest. girl and boy may be terribly inefficient at getting anything done, but one thing they don't lack is Ambition (or perhaps -delusion).
Boy couldn't really concentrate on the running, though, because all he could think of was kathi rolls. girl promised they would stop for the delicious indian snacks after the run and that made him want to stop the run even faster.
Even after the run, so many distractions - obstacles - stood in the way between boy and the kathi rolls. For one thing, girl insisted on going for blocks in the OPPOSITE direction to get cupcakes, and when they finally arrived at the Magnolia bakery, they had to wait in a long line. And then there was another tempting store (with strawberry desserts.. yum) fighting for their limited dollars.
By the time they eventually arrived at the Indian Bread Co., boy was so cold he could barely feel his fingers and so hungry he considered taking secret bites of the precious cupcakes. And they only had enough cash for one kathi roll each. Boy made up for it though, by stuffing his roll with everything available - chicken, egg, onions, chilis - while girl ordered a simple potato roll. Even then, they were 18 cents short. oh oh, boy had a moment of panic - would he be denied this roll he had been dreaming for so long now to eat? Luckily, the nice people at the counter let them have their food, even though they couldn't pay for it all.
With the rolls, cupcakes, and other purchases in hand, they rushed home in the cold, up the four flights of stairs, sat at the round table, quickly unwrapped the foil of their kathi rolls -- and relished each bite.
they were satisfied for a little bit, but soon hungry again. this time it was time for girl to have what she had been dreaming of all weekend: daal. She had been out of daal for weeks and finally on saturday night, she escaped a friend's house with a little ziploc bag full of the orange lentils. boy made delicious daal, girl made eggplants and together with lots of rice, they had a yummy dinner at home.
after dinner - it was time for a birthday cupcake. while boy's birthday was technically last weekend, since they lost an hour last sunday because of daylight savings, girl decided that he could have one more hour of birthday today. on the table were pretty cupcakes with pink frosting, chocolate frosting, and vanilla frosting. girl lit a candle on the pink cupcake and everyone sang happy birthday to the birthday boy. boy was so excited, he decided he was going to have yet another birthday next weekend.
