The umbrella girl, the purple penguine and the upside down little boy.
If you haven’t heard from the boy recently it is because he has been going through a lot since the girl left. He managed to move all his stuff to his friend’s house and his room was like an giant Logo set with dozens of boxes sitting on top of each other. He managed to tidy up the place a bit and his room has since transformed from a pig’s sty of the previous tenant to a pop star’s crib from MTV - from orange comforters to modern art in orange courtesy of the girl. Even then, the boy’s mood has been swinging from one extreme to the other. He hasn’t been able to complete his homework on time and has had to deal with recruiters everyday. He has been sleeping way too much and of course - he misses the girl. The girl said the boy should try doing cartwheels in the park which should make him feel better. And today he did and it did make him feel better although he almost passed out trying to keep up with his friend.
At the entrance to the BMICH, Sri Lanka's fancy convention center, security guards collected ID cards and cell phones, which were not allowed inside. Girl handed over her California driver's license. She was to attend a presentation on Marxism and federalism by a member of the Marxist political party in India. After passing through the security checkpoint, she lingered in the hallway, before some guards ushered her into a conference room. The check-in table asked her for her name, but the guards told them "foreign press" so gave her a badge and asked her what paper she was with. Confused, girl mumbled something and was whisked into a large room, full of people. Only the first row of seats were empty - marked by a sign "Reserved for Media." Girl was led to a seat right in front. She must have been late, because everyone was seated and the presentation started. Only there were no Marxists or Indians at the podium. Instead, government leaders from China! Oops. She was clearly in the wrong room. She whipped out her notebook and started taking notes - like any good press-pass carrying member of the Media. And when there was an opportune pause, she ran out as fast as she could, nevertheless creating a bit of a scene. Happily, she eventually found the Marxists.
girl was shocked to see a huge fire burning outside her window. she stared in horror at the flames that seemed to be spreading rapidly toward her. what is the number of the fire deparment, she asked her next door neighbor. then she was informed that it wasn't a wildfire at her doorstep but people burning their trash. the smoke gushed with the breeze right into her bedroom. she didn't like it at all. if boy was there, he would do some kung fu moves and get rid of those trash-burning people. anyway, the lesson of the story is: 911 does not work in sri lanka.
It was as if someone in the Cosmos had seen the predicament of girl in her new flat. From high above the heavens to the earth's ground above tumbled not one, but two: a maid and a cook. Suddenly girl had to think of menus each day - hoppers, roti, more hoppers, rice, more hoppers and there was more food than she and her cousin could ever eat.
After a week of endless cups of samahan and inhaling kotmale, girl was still in bed, sick with some sort of flu. She had to stay at home while her friends went out every night. She didn’t even have a television to distract her. She stared at blank walls and felt as she was in a monastery. Finally she decided that it was time to throw all the samahan in the trash. She got some extra strong antibiotics. She was better the very next morning.
