A Victorian Husband

Her brow was raging with a fierce temperature. The chunky jewels and the heavily adorned saree that she was draped in made her slender frame to hunch. Her grandmother had said he was going to be handsome; dark and tall and handsome. She had imagined that the knight that would woo her would be of equal description to Austen's Mr. Darcy. But her eyes had met with a stockily built, dark man. Her disappointment had made her a spell dizzier and the temperature that ailed her brow had risen a notch higher.
The transaction had ended as it had begun. She had only just turned sweet sixteen and was quite unaware of the bees and the birds and the gilded flies. Yet she was betrothed to a man 14 years her senior. Her family had merged into aristoracy. They were one of the most elitist families in the hill capital, and the merger with the rich doctor made the social equation complete. Aristocracy had met aristocracy.
In retrospect, she is happy to talk about her life, her life with a husband whom she hardly mingled with. A smile crossed her finely lined but gracefully aged face, as she rememebered the waltzing lessons she took with Gerry- her husband's brother, who was of equal years as her and with whom she formed a comforting and easy friendship, in the absence of her husband. "Well he was never home" she said almost in justification.
Given the disparity in age, she was widowed early in life and it seemed easy to talk about her marriage, very matter of factly. But her brow creased with a frown as she told us about the many lady friends, who her doctor husband socialised with, even after his marriage to her. It had clearly exasperated her in her younger days, but she was devoid of any emotion when she said "I believe they were just friends". In the same breath she added that he treated her very well, the definition of which was of materialist concern. In illustration 'treating her very well' equallled to a trip to Japan on her 21st Birthday and a trip to Greece on her 24th.
But was this just his way of making amends to her, for the lack of companionship he could give her? But then, was it his fault he could not take interest in the hollow conversations a 16 year old had to make with him?
